Niko Movement

Niko Movement is a street art and urban art initiative founded in 2018 that has been taking place annually in various cities across Georgia ever since. Its goal is to "transform as many lifeless walls as possible," inspire local artists, and establish street art throughout the country. To achieve this, the project deliberately uses privately owned yet highly visible walls rather than public or government-owned surfaces. Funding comes from private sponsors.

Alongside local talents, international artists also participate, bringing fresh perspectives and encouraging exchange with the Georgian art scene. As a result, the festival has introduced large-scale murals not only to Tbilisi, Batumi, and Kutaisi, but also to smaller cities such as Rustavi, Poti, Gori, and Ozurgeti, creating new cultural landmarks in these communities. The initiative is named after the Georgian painter Niko Pirosmani. Its logo, a seated dog, is taken from one of his paintings. Just as Pirosmani portrayed the everyday lives of ordinary people, participating street artists are encouraged to reflect local stories, traditions, and distinctive features of the places where they work.

Niko Movement ist eine 2018 gegründete Street Art und Urban Art Initiative, die seit 2018 jedes Jahr in verschiedenen Städten Georgiens stattfindet. Ziel ist es, "so viele leblose Wände wie möglich zu gestalten", lokale Künstler zu motivieren und Street Art im ganzen Land zu etablieren. Dabei werden bewusst keine staatlichen, sondern private, aber gut sichtbare Wände genutzt. Die Finanzierung erfolgt über private Sponsoren.

Neben lokalen Talenten wirken auch internationale Künstler mit, die neue Impulse einbringen und den Austausch mit der georgischen Szene fördern. So bringt das Festival großformatige Murals nicht nur nach Tbilissi, Batumi und Kutaissi, sondern auch in kleinere Städte wie Rustawi, Poti, Gori oder Osurgeti und schafft dort neue kulturelle Wahrzeichen.

Namensgeber ist der georgische Maler Niko Pirosmani, das Logo - ein sitzender Hund - entstammt einem seiner Bilder. Wie Pirosmani das Alltagsleben der Menschen darstellte, so sind auch die Street Art Künstler aufgefordert, lokale Geschichten und Besonderheiten in ihren Arbeiten aufzugreifen.
